In 1817, Swedish chemist Johan August Arfwedson was analyzing specimens of petalite ore from the Utö mine in Sweden and found that after accounting for all the aluminum, silicon, and oxygen in his samples, approximately 4% of the mass remained unidentified. That unaccounted 4% turned out to be a previously unknown element, which he and his mentor Jöns Jacob Berzelius named "lithion" — later lithium — from the Greek "lithos" meaning stone. But facetable, eye-clean, transparent petalite in sizes above one carat is a very different proposition. Petalite forms typically in slab-like or tabular crystal masses rather than in the well-formed prismatic crystals that other pegmatite gemstones (tourmaline, beryl, topaz) produce. This tabular habit, combined with perfect cleavage in one direction and poor cleavage in another, means that most petalite rough cannot survive the stresses of faceting without skilled preforming to stabilize the crystal before the lapidary begins cutting. Most cutters avoid petalite entirely.
