Natural Diaspore Gemstones – Color Change

Natural color change diaspore gemstone showing green to pink shift Turkish origin

Buy Natural Color Change Diaspore Gemstones Online

Diaspore is one of the most remarkable color-change gemstones in the world. A natural aluminum hydroxide mineral sourced almost exclusively from the Ilbir Mountains of southwestern Turkey, it shifts dramatically between kiwi green or sage green in daylight and raspberry pink to champagne purple under incandescent light. Fine color-change diaspore is simultaneously rare, naturally untreated, and visually arresting in a way that very few gemstones can match. In the collector world it occupies the same prestige category as alexandrite, with the critical distinction that diaspore is more affordable and entirely from a single geological source that makes long-term supply genuinely constrained.

The color-change property of diaspore is driven by manganese impurities within the crystal lattice that selectively absorb different wavelengths depending on the spectral composition of the light source. Under cool daylight or fluorescent light the stone appears in tones of kiwi green, sage green, yellowish-green, or pale olive. Under warm incandescent light or candlelight, the same stone transforms to raspberry pink, champagne, purplish-pink, or lavender. The intensity of the shift is the primary value driver in this market: stones showing a vivid, clearly distinct shift between green and pink command the highest premiums, while stones with a weaker or ambiguous shift are considerably less valuable.

Single-Source Rarity and the Turkish Deposit

Color-change diaspore is effectively a single-source gemstone. The Ilbir Mountains of Muğla Province in southwestern Turkey produce virtually all gem-quality color-change material in the world. Diaspore occurs as a common industrial mineral in bauxite deposits globally, but the gem-quality, color-changing variety is unique to this Turkish locality. Only approximately 2% of extracted rough from this deposit meets gem-quality standards, making fine faceted material genuinely scarce. This single-source nature places diaspore in a category comparable to tanzanite, a stone whose supply is geographically constrained and whose long-term availability cannot be taken for granted. GemPiece sources color-change diaspore directly from Turkish suppliers with full origin documentation on every parcel.

Trade Names: Zultanite and Csarite

The trade name Zultanite was coined in 2006, named in honor of the 36 Sultans of the Ottoman Empire that ruled Turkey from 1299 to 1923. Csarite is an alternative trademark from the same Turkish source. Both names are legally trademarked and can only be applied to diaspore from specific licensed operations within the Ilbir Mountains deposit. Material from the same geological formation sold by unlicensed parties is correctly labeled Turkish diaspore or color-change diaspore and is mineralogically and optically identical. GemPiece uses the accurate mineral name diaspore for all material, with full origin documentation provided.

Color Range and What to Look For

The color shift in diaspore ranges from subtle to dramatic depending on the manganese concentration and the optical path length through the stone. Fine Turkish diaspore in good color shifts between clearly distinct green and clearly distinct raspberry pink under the two light sources. Weaker stones show a less dramatic shift, appearing in the yellow-green to peach-champagne range rather than the full green-to-pink transformation. When purchasing diaspore for its color-change property, always view the stone under both daylight and incandescent light, ideally in person or through a supplier who provides video documentation of the color change under both sources. GemPiece provides macro-photographed and filmed documentation of every stone in our collection under both light conditions.

Diaspore also exhibits strong pleochroism in three crystallographic directions, meaning the stone can show additional color nuances when viewed from different angles: yellowish green, greenish gray, and violet depending on orientation. This trichroic character adds visual complexity beyond the primary daylight-to-incandescent shift.

Clarity, Cut, and Jewelry Use

Turkish color-change diaspore is a relatively clean gemstone for its type. Most faceted specimens are eye-clean to very slightly included, with the most common inclusions being fingerprints and fluid inclusions. Eye-clean material with strong color change and expert cutting represents the optimal quality combination. Oval, cushion, pear, and round cuts are most popular for diaspore as these shapes best showcase the color transformation and maximize light return.

With a hardness of 6.5 to 7 Mohs, diaspore is suitable for all jewelry types. It has perfect cleavage in one direction, so protective settings such as bezels or halos are recommended for ring use to protect against direct impact along the cleavage plane. For earrings and pendants, standard prong settings are perfectly appropriate.

Value and Investment Case

The primary value driver is the strength and distinctiveness of the color change. Stones shifting between clearly vivid green and clearly vivid pink command the highest premiums. Size is the second major factor: larger diaspore showing strong color change is genuinely scarce, and prices increase significantly above 3 carats in fine quality. Eye-clean clarity and expert cut add further value. Diaspore is naturally untreated, the color is entirely natural with no enhancement required. Color-change diaspore ranges from approximately $70 to $900 per carat for commercial to fine quality; Zultanite-grade above 5 carats in vivid color commands $500 to $10,000 per carat or more at retail. Frequently Asked Questions

What is diaspore gemstone?

Diaspore is a natural aluminum hydroxide mineral (AlO(OH)) that occurs in gem-quality form almost exclusively in the Ilbir Mountains of southwestern Turkey. Its defining property is a dramatic color change from kiwi green or sage green in daylight to raspberry pink or champagne purple under incandescent light. It is sold commercially under the trademarked names Zultanite and Csarite, though the underlying mineral is always diaspore.

Is Zultanite the same as diaspore?

Yes. Zultanite and Csarite are trademarked commercial names for color-change diaspore from a specific mining operation in Turkey's Ilbir Mountains. The underlying mineral is diaspore in all cases. Material from the same geological deposit sold without these trademarks as Turkish diaspore or color-change diaspore is mineralogically and optically identical to trademarked material.

What causes diaspore's color change?

Manganese (Mn³⁺) impurities within the crystal lattice produce a broad absorption band in the orange-yellow region of the visible spectrum. Under daylight (cool spectrum rich in blue and green wavelengths), the stone appears green. Under incandescent light (warm spectrum rich in orange and red), the same stone transmits predominantly pink and purple wavelengths, producing the raspberry pink or champagne appearance. The mechanism is similar to alexandrite's color change but involves different trace elements in a different mineral host.

Is diaspore treated?

No. Color-change diaspore from Turkey is naturally untreated. The color change is entirely natural, produced by trace manganese in the crystal structure, and requires no enhancement of any kind. This untreated status is consistent across the species and is an important distinction for collectors who value natural unenhanced gemstones.

Where is diaspore mined?

Virtually all gem-quality color-change diaspore comes from the Ilbir Mountains of Muğla Province in southwestern Turkey. No other location in the world produces color-changing gem-quality diaspore comparable to Turkish material. Afghanistan produces pleochroic diaspore in pink-lilac tones but without the same dramatic color-change effect.

Is diaspore durable for everyday jewelry?

Yes. At 6.5 to 7 Mohs hardness, diaspore is suitable for most jewelry applications. Perfect cleavage in one direction means protective settings are recommended for ring use to prevent damage from direct impact. For earrings, pendants, and brooches, standard settings are appropriate. With proper settings and care, diaspore is a practical everyday gemstone.

How does diaspore compare to alexandrite?

Both are natural color-change gemstones. Alexandrite is a variety of chrysoberyl colored by chromium, shifting from green to red or purple. Diaspore is an aluminum hydroxide colored by manganese, shifting from green to pink or champagne. Both are highly desirable. Alexandrite typically commands higher prices per carat at comparable quality. Diaspore offers a more accessible price point for the color-change phenomenon with the added distinction of single-source origin rarity.
