The name sphalerite was derived from the Greek word Sphaleros which means treacherous. Sphalerite is called Zinc blende.
The chemical combination is ZnS. The color ranges from yellow, golden yeelow, orangy yellow, reddish orange, light to dark brown, black, and some rare colourless and light blue.
The light yellow variety is called Cleiophane, the orange and res shades are said to be a ruby blende with respect to the mineral content, the manganese rich variety is graded as almandite and the black or matallic varieties are called marmatite or black jack.
