Natural Star Sapphire Gemstones

Natural star sapphire six rayed asterism corundum Sri Lanka blue grey gemstone

Buy Natural Star Sapphire – Six-Rayed Asterism from Sri Lanka

Star sapphire is the asterism-displaying variety of sapphire — a gemstone that reveals a natural six-rayed star pattern across the surface of the cabochon when viewed under a single directional light source such as sunlight or a penlight. The star effect is produced by the same optical phenomenon as in star ruby: microscopic rutile needle inclusions oriented in three intersecting directions within the corundum crystal simultaneously reflect light as three crossing bands, producing the characteristic six-pointed star that glides across the dome of the stone as the viewing angle changes.

Star sapphire combines the color range and extraordinary durability of corundum — hardness 9 on the Mohs scale — with one of the most visually compelling optical phenomena in the gemstone world.

At GemPiece, we offer carefully selected natural star sapphire gemstones. Explore our sapphire collection or related varieties including color change sapphire, ruby, and star ruby.

What Causes the Star in Star Sapphire?

Star sapphire's asterism is produced by aligned rutile (TiO₂) needle inclusions oriented in three intersecting crystallographic directions within the corundum crystal — identical to the mechanism in star ruby. When light strikes the domed cabochon surface, it reflects off each set of parallel needles as a single bright line. Three sets producing three lines simultaneously create the six-rayed star. The lapidary must orient the cabochon so the c-axis of the crystal points precisely through the crown of the dome, centering and sharpening the star.

Color Range of Star Sapphire

Star sapphire occurs across the full corundum color range. Blue star sapphire — the most commercially recognized variety — ranges from pale grey-blue through vivid blue to deep midnight blue. Grey star sapphire is common and valued for its neutral tone that allows the star to display with maximum contrast. Black star sapphire from Thailand and Australia displays a dramatic star against a very dark body. Pink star sapphire and other fancy color variants exist and are prized by collectors.

Origins and Sources

Sri Lanka is the most important source of fine blue star sapphire, producing material with attractive body color and well-defined stars. The famous 563-carat Star of India — one of the largest blue star sapphires in the world — is a Sri Lankan stone on display at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. Myanmar (Mogok) produces fine blue star sapphire. Thailand and Australia are major commercial sources of black and dark blue star sapphire. Madagascar produces a range of star sapphire varieties.

Quality and Value Factors

  • Star sharpness and brightness — the primary quality factor
  • Star centering — a well-centered star commands premiums over off-center material
  • Body color intensity — vivid blue with strong star is premium
  • Transparency — slightly translucent to semi-transparent material preferred
  • Size — large star sapphires above 10 carats with good star are collector pieces
  • Treatment — natural untreated material commands premiums

Frequently Asked Questions

What is star sapphire?

Star sapphire is a variety of sapphire that displays a natural six-rayed star across the cabochon surface from asterism produced by aligned rutile needle inclusions within the corundum crystal, visible under single directional light.

What is the most famous star sapphire?

The Star of India — a 563-carat grey-blue star sapphire from Sri Lanka — is one of the most famous star sapphires in the world, displayed at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City.

Is star sapphire durable for jewelry?

Yes. Star sapphire shares corundum's hardness of 9, making it one of the most durable optical-phenomenon gemstones available and suitable for all jewelry applications with standard care.

How does star sapphire differ from star ruby?

Both display asterism from the same rutile needle inclusion mechanism within corundum. Star ruby is the red corundum variety; star sapphire encompasses all other colors. Optical mechanism and quality evaluation criteria are identical for both.
