Ruby Color Range

The GIA defines the finest ruby as pure, vibrant red to slightly purplish-red — a color that is neither too dark nor too light, with vivid saturation and no brown or orange modifier. In the trade, the highest color standard has a specific name: pigeon blood red — a designation formally introduced by GRS (Gem Research Swisslab) in 1998 and now used by GRS, Gübelin, and SSEF as a measurable quality notation on laboratory reports. To qualify, a ruby must display vivid red with high chromium content, a Cr/Fe ratio greater than 1, and medium to strong UV fluorescence. Rubies that meet this standard account for a small fraction of all ruby production globally.

• Vivid red — strong saturation without reaching pigeon blood criteria; fine commercial and collector quality

Ruby Origins

Myanmar — Mogok Stone Tract: The historic benchmark. Marble-hosted corundum deposits produce rubies with exceptionally low iron and high chromium — the geological formula for strong UV fluorescence and the glowing, self-lit quality that defines the finest Burmese material. Mozambique — Montepuez: Discovered in 2009 and now the world's largest ruby producing region by volume. The Montepuez deposit hosts two chemically distinct ruby populations — Type A with low iron approaching Mogok chemistry, and Type B with higher iron and lower fluorescence. The Gemfields-operated concession has produced rubies across all quality tiers from commercial to exceptional, including stones granted pigeon blood designation by GRS. Vietnam — Luc Yen and Quy Chau: Marble-hosted deposits producing vivid red material with fluorescence characteristics similar to Mogok. Fine Vietnamese ruby with pigeon blood designation has appeared at international auction.

Sri Lanka: Alluvial deposits producing a wide range from fine red to pinkish material. Top-grade Sri Lankan red in larger sizes can approach Mogok quality; most commercial material trends toward pink. Strong fluorescence is common.

Thailand and Cambodia: Basalt-hosted deposits with higher iron content. Characteristically dark, purplish-red stones with very low UV fluorescence. Historically the dominant trading origin before Myanmar and Mozambique material became widely available.

Madagascar, Afghanistan, Tajikistan: Additional significant sources. Afghanistan's Jegdalek produces marble-type ruby. Madagascar's Didy deposit produces amphibolite-type material. All three have yielded fine stones with laboratory-confirmed origin documentation.

Ruby Quality — What Determines Value

Color is the overwhelmingly dominant factor. The GIA states that color is the most important determinant of ruby value, and that the finest stones have vibrant, pure red to slightly purplish-red with vivid saturation. Stones with brown or orange modifiers are significantly discounted. A pigeon blood color notation from GRS or Gübelin adds a premium that can be measurable in multiples rather than percentages.

Treatment status is the second most critical factor. Over 95% of commercial ruby has been heat-treated. Unheated ruby confirmed by a reputable laboratory commands premiums that compound significantly with quality — a fine unheated Mogok pigeon blood ruby above 3 carats is among the rarest collector acquisitions in the colored gemstone world.

Clarity — Ruby is a GIA Type III gemstone, meaning inclusions are expected. The commercial standard is eye-clean to lightly included. Heavily included material is discounted. Completely clean ruby is extremely rare and commands premiums.

Origin — Laboratory-confirmed origin documentation from GRS, Gübelin, GIA, or Lotus is essential for significant purchases. Mogok origin commands the strongest premium, followed by Mozambique and Vietnam.

Carat weight — Size premiums in ruby are severe. Fine material above 3 carats is rare; above 5 carats in unheated vivid red represents a genuinely important acquisition; above 10 carats in collector quality is extraordinary.

Ruby Treatments — What You Need to Know

Heat treatment is the standard industry practice — permanent, universally disclosed on laboratory certificates, and accepted across all major markets. Most commercial ruby has been heated to dissolve silk inclusions that cause cloudiness and to improve color saturation. A heated ruby with full laboratory disclosure is a legitimate purchase at appropriate pricing.

Lead glass filling treats heavily fractured, low-quality material by filling cavities with lead-rich glass — dramatically improving apparent clarity but creating a stone with very low durability, sensitivity to cleaning chemicals, and minimal resale value. GemPiece does not carry glass-filled rubies.

Beryllium diffusion drives beryllium into the corundum lattice at extreme temperatures to alter color. This treatment produces artificially vivid colors and must be disclosed. It represents a more invasive enhancement than standard heat treatment and is priced accordingly.

Unheated ruby — confirmed by intact silk inclusions and other heat-sensitive internal features documented by the laboratory — commands premiums of 3 to 10 times or more over heated material of identical appearance, depending on quality and origin.
