Mineral Composition

Scapolite rutile shares the mineralogy of the scapolite series — a continuous solid solution between marialite (Na₄Al₃Si₉O₂₄Cl) and meionite (Ca₄Al₆Si₆O₂₄CO₃) — in the tetragonal crystal system. Hardness 5.5 to 6, specific gravity 2.57 to 2.74, refractive index 1.540 to 1.579. The rutile inclusions are a secondary mineral phase — titanium dioxide (TiO₂) that crystallized within the scapolite host during or after the primary crystal formation, oriented along crystallographic directions determined by the tetragonal symmetry of the host. Rutile is an extremely common inclusion mineral in many gemstone species, appearing in sapphire (as the silk that produces star stones), quartz (as golden needles in rutilated quartz), and scapolite.


The Rutile Inclusion and Its Optical Effects

Rutile needles in scapolite typically align along the c-axis of the tetragonal crystal, producing a parallel or slightly fan-like array of fine golden to reddish-brown needles visible as a silky, internally luminous shimmer within the stone under direct light. The density of the rutile inclusions varies between specimens — very sparse rutile produces a subtle silky texture within an otherwise transparent stone; moderate density produces a clearly visible internal illumination; very high density produces a near-opaque silky mass that can develop into genuine chatoyancy.

When rutile density reaches the threshold where the parallel needles are sufficiently numerous and well-aligned to reflect a concentrated band of light from the cabochon surface, the specimen transitions from rutile scapolite into scapolite cat's eye — the two varieties exist on a continuum rather than as sharply distinct categories. A single specimen that shows both a diffuse silky rutile texture and a developing chatoyant band occupies both categories simultaneously and represents the most optically complex form of either variety.


Sources

Tanzania — particularly the Umba Valley gem district — and Myanmar are the primary sources of rutile-bearing scapolite suitable for collector use. The same geological conditions that produce gem-quality yellow and violet scapolite from these localities also occasionally produce material with significant rutile inclusions. The frequency of rutile-bearing material within any given scapolite deposit is irregular, making supply inherently limited.


Treatment Status
